Alphabet’s (NASDAQ:GOOGL) Google is making significant strides in the digital mapping arena with continuous improvements to Google Maps.
The company recently unveiled a new feature on Google Maps, currently available to select users, which displays entrances to buildings. This update addresses the challenge of navigating to specific parts of a building accurately on the map.
This enhancement aims to enhance user experience by providing precise directions for businesses and locations.
Alphabet is poised to gain considerable traction among Android users with this latest feature.
Google Maps Spotlight
In addition to this recent addition, Google has introduced “glanceable directions” for Maps on Android and iOS. This feature offers live Estimated Time of Arrival (ETA) and directions directly on the device’s lock screen through standard system notifications.
Furthermore, Google has rolled out updates for wearable devices and navigation, including public transit directions on Google Maps for Wear OS. These updates also include driving, cycling, and walking directions, as well as suggested routes and compass-guided map views.
The company is also set to introduce additional features for its Maps application, allowing users to delete location-related activity on Android, with location controls such as Location History and Timeline status available.
These initiatives will help Alphabet seize the growth opportunities in the global digital map market. According to a report by Future Market Insights, this market is projected to reach $73.1 billion by 2033, with a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 14.8% between 2023 and 2033.
Moreover, Google’s efforts to enhance Google Maps align with Alphabet’s broader strategy to strengthen its Android offerings, which will drive growth in its Google Services segment. This segment remains a key growth driver for the company. Alphabet’s shares have increased by 44.5% in the past year, compared to the Computer & Technology sector’s growth of 46.8%.
The growing Google Services segment is expected to positively impact the company’s overall financial performance in the future.
Stiff Competition
Alphabet’s efforts to enhance Google Maps will enable it to compete effectively against rivals like Apple and Microsoft, which are also enhancing their mapping services.
Apple is experiencing growth in its Apple Maps offerings. The company recently launched Apple Business Connect, a free tool that allows businesses to manage their location, place cards and customize information for over a billion users on Apple Maps. This includes the ability to add photos, logos, and promotions.
Meanwhile, Microsoft is improving Bing Maps with new features. The company introduced live traffic updates on Bing Maps, providing users with real-time information about traffic conditions during their commutes.
