Alphabet Plans to Enhance Chromebook Features With App Mall

Alphabet Stock

Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOGL) is experiencing significant growth momentum with its Chromebook devices, driven by the introduction of new features.

To further improve user experience, the company is gearing up to launch an ‘App Mall’, aimed at facilitating the discovery of favorite apps or games on Chromebook or ChromeOS tablets.

The App Mall will provide users with the ability to explore and install new Android apps from the Google Play Store, as well as games through platforms like Steam and Linux development environments such as Android Studio.

Alphabet anticipates a strong response from Chromebook users following this latest development.

Expanding Chromebook Initiatives

In addition to the App Mall, Alphabet is focusing on enhancing the quality-of-life features of ChromeOS. These enhancements include updates to the launcher, the option to hide profile pictures, a new settings icon, Diagnostics app cards, and the ability to install apps directly from the Play Store, akin to Android and iOS.

Moreover, the company has unveiled a range of feature updates for Chromebooks with the release of ChromeOS 120. These updates include the introduction of a Virtual Desk Button, Nearby Share Self-Share functionality, and “Mouse” settings for seamless desk switching and device transfers. Users will also have control over cursor speed, scrolling speed, and acceleration.

These efforts are aimed at enabling Alphabet to capitalize on growth opportunities in the global laptop market. According to an EMR report, the global laptop market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 4.7% between 2024 and 2032.

Furthermore, these advancements in Chromebooks are expected to bolster Alphabet’s Google Services segment, which has been a key growth driver for the company. Over the past year, its shares have surged by 44.2%, outperforming the Zacks Computer & Technology sector’s growth of 46.8%.

The strengthening of the Google Services segment is anticipated to contribute to Alphabet’s overall financial performance in the future.

Rising Competition

Alphabet’s efforts to enhance Chromebook updates are poised to enhance its competitive position against rivals like Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) and Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT), both of which are also intensifying their efforts to improve their notebook and laptop offerings.

Apple recently expanded Self Service Repair for MacBook Pro and iMac models powered by M3, providing customers with access to manuals, genuine parts, and tools used at Apple Store locations and Authorized Service Providers.

Additionally, Apple unveiled the macOS Sonoma update for compatible Macs, bringing several improvements over its predecessor, Venture. This free software update introduces new features such as desktop widgets, screen savers, video conferencing, Safari enhancements, and optimized gaming, enriching the Mac experience.

Meanwhile, Microsoft has been gaining strong customer traction with its Surface Laptop 6 product line.

The Surface Laptop 6 boasts an updated design with thinner bezels, rounded display corners, and more ports. Available in two sizes, with a 13.8-inch display for the smaller model and a 15-inch display for the larger one, the laptop features a haptic touchpad and a dedicated Copilot button.
