UnitedHealthcare Secures Medicaid Contract from AHCCCS

UNH Stock

UnitedHealth Group’s business unit, UnitedHealthcare (NYSE:UNH), has been awarded a contract by the Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System (AHCCCS), the Medicaid agency of Arizona, to serve members of the Arizona Long Term Care System (ALTCS) EPD program. ALTCS focuses on providing care to the elderly and physically disabled population in the state. The contract, expected to be effective from October 2024, is initially for three years, with the possibility of extension up to four times for one year each.

Under the contract, UnitedHealthcare will collaborate with AHCCCS to understand the needs of the state’s residents and provide case management, long-term services, and assistance. The aim is to offer whole-person and equitable care to ALTCS members across all counties in Arizona, leading to improved health outcomes for the medically vulnerable aged and disabled community.

UnitedHealthcare’s Arizona unit currently serves over 8,600 long-term care EPD members in north and central Arizona. With more than three decades of experience in catering to the long-term care population in Arizona, the new contract win is expected to expand UnitedHealthcare’s service area and attract more statewide members.

The strength of UnitedHealthcare’s Medicaid business has contributed to numerous contract wins from different state authorities, enhancing membership growth and revenue for the health insurer. In September, the company was selected by the Texas Health and Human Services Commission to serve members of its Medicaid managed care program, STAR+PLUS. The company has also secured a Medicaid managed care contract from the New Mexico Human Services Department to serve residents from July 1, 2024.

UnitedHealth Group’s shares have gained 11.6% in the past six months, outpacing the industry’s growth.
