Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) has appointed Mustafa Suleyman to lead its consumer artificial intelligence business, adding a prominent figure to its team focused on developing technology that Suleyman sees as both a benefit and a threat to humanity.

Suleyman, a co-founder of the AI research lab DeepMind, announced on Tuesday via LinkedIn that he will serve as CEO of Microsoft AI. In this role, he will oversee all of the company’s consumer AI products and research, including the generative AI service Copilot, as well as the Bing search engine and Edge browser.

Microsoft is also bringing onboard the chief scientist from Suleyman’s AI company, Inflection, along with several top engineers and researchers, according to a blog post by Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella.

These new hires are expected to strengthen Microsoft’s position in the AI industry, as major tech companies compete to meet the growing demand for AI services. Microsoft has already made significant investments in AI, including a partnership with OpenAI, the creators of ChatGPT, and a recent collaboration with the French AI startup Mistral.

Suleyman’s background includes co-founding DeepMind, which was acquired by Google in 2014. He left DeepMind in 2022 to establish Inflection.ai with LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman, aiming to develop AI that avoids problematic behaviors such as racism, sexism, and violence.

Suleyman is also the co-author of “The Coming Wave,” a book that explores the potential of AI while emphasizing the importance of mitigating its risks.
