Meta (NASDAQ: FB)
announced its new AI Research SuperCluster (RSC), a supercomputer designed to aid in AI research projects. The technology, which has been in the works for the last two years, is expected to help Meta create more powerful AI software.
“With RSC, we can more quickly train [AI]
models that use multi-modal signals — for example, to understand the context of a post, including language, images, and tone,” Shubho Sengupta, a software engineer at Meta (
FB
), told CNN Business.
According to CEO Mark Zuckerberg, the company’s expansion into the metaverse requires a lot of compute-power. The RSC is set to allow new AI models to acquire knowledge from trillions of examples, comprehend hundreds of languages, and much more.
Meta employees revealed it could allow big groups of people worldwide to play a game based on augmented reality. Special headsets and glasses are being developed by companies such as Apple and the owner of Snapchat.
“We hope RSC will help us build entirely new AI systems that can, for example, power real-time voice translations to large groups of people, each speaking a different language, so they can seamlessly collaborate on a research project or play an AR game together,” wrote the Meta researchers. “Ultimately, the work done with RSC will pave the way toward building technologies for the next major computing platform – the metaverse, where AI-driven applications and products will play an important role.”
