GE Vernova’s Hydro Power division, a segment of General Electric Company (NYSE:GE), has been awarded a contract by Yangtze Power to modernize the 6.4-gigawatt Xiangjiaba Hydropower Plant located in China. GE Vernova encompasses the collaborative efforts of GE Digital, Renewable Energy, and GE Power. Through its Hydro Power division, the company provides solutions for harnessing hydropower, contributing to the global shift toward renewable energy sources.
The Xiangjiaba Hydropower Plant, along with its eight hydropower units, is positioned downstream of the Jinsha River. Under the agreement, General Electric will undertake the design, manufacturing, supply, installation, and commissioning of three sets of primary shaft air supply pipes for the Xiangjiaba Hydropower Plant. This enhancement aims to improve the sealing mechanism while maintaining the plant’s operational efficiency.
The upgrade is anticipated to be concluded during the initial half of 2024. Having commenced operations in 2014, the Xiangjiaba power plant stands as one of China’s most expansive hydropower facilities. It plays a vital role in providing green energy to approximately five million individuals annually, facilitating energy transfer from Western to Eastern China.
Beyond its significant power generation role, the Xiangjiaba project contributes to flood prevention, enhances shipping conditions, and supports agricultural irrigation in the region. Notably, the project leads to a reduction of 12 million tons of CO2 emissions each year.
